Deep Hollowing Bar

Introduction | Specifications |

Introduction

Turning hollow forms is one of the most risky and stressful forms of wood turning. Any small mistake when your tool is hanging 10" off the tool rest can instantly destroy your piece and hours of hard work. Hollow forms are usually turned from rare and precious wood, making ruined pieces that much more heart breaking. To increase the chances of successfully finishing a hollow form, ONEWAY has developed a back arrested hollowing bar. By restraining the bar from lifting or twisting, deeper forms can be turned safely and with confidence. Turners no longer have to be subjected to the vibration and jarring usually associated with hollow turning. Making hollow forms is now as relaxing and rewarding as any other form of turning.

Specifications

The bar is made of 1" diameter steel pipe. A wire up the middle of the bar is used to power a 12 volt light that illuminates the inside of your piece and on thin light colored woods shows translucent wall thickness. The bar easily works through a 2" hole and 10" deep. With care it is possible to go 12" deep. The high speed steel cutter is tear drop shaped so the same cutter can be used for roughing out the bulk of the material and then flipped around for smoothing cuts. A slot in the cutter and an offset hole in the cutter holder allows many different cutter positions to be used.

To gain extra light brightness a 24V transformer is used with a 12V bulb. This limits light to about 1 hour from tests conducted.

NOTE: Please specify the swing of your lathe when ordering. Rear restraints and support posts are available in three sizes; for machines with 8" - 10" swings (3/4" post), for 10" - 16" swings, and for over 16" swings (latter two have 1" posts).

Deep Hollowing Bar includes:

  • 1 rigid bar (wired)
  • 1 cutter & cutter holder
  • 1 rear restraint (3 sizes available)
  • 1 support post (3 sizes available)
  • 1 110 - 24 Volt transformer
  • 2 light bulbs (12 Volt)
